Disaster chasers

Recovering from a flood, fire, storm or cyclone can feel overwhelming. Sadly, this is when scammers known as disaster chasers often appear — using pressure tactics to sell services you don’t need or that could cost you more later.

What Is a Disaster Chaser?

After a natural disaster, you might see:

  • Door‑knocking
  • Unexpected calls or texts
  • Flyers in your letterbox
  • Targeted online ads

They often claim they can:

  • Assess damage to your home
  • Deal with your insurer for you
  • Arrange cheap or fast repairs

These offers can sound helpful — but signing up can lead to higher costs, delays, or problems with your insurance claim.

Take Your Time Before You Agree to Anything

  • Don’t sign anything on the spot.
  • You have a 10‑day cooling‑off period if you do sign — you can cancel by phone, email, in writing or in person.
  • Always contact your insurer first.
Repairs done outside their preferred provider list may mean extra costs.
  • Ask your insurer about emergency repairs such as temporary tarps, debris removal or temporary accommodation.
  • Most insurers now offer easy online claim forms with clear steps to follow.

How to Spot a Disaster Chaser

Be careful if someone:

  • Offers a “today‑only” deal
  • Promises unusually cheap or fast repairs
  • Asks for money upfront
  • Pressures you to sign immediately
  • Tells you not to speak with your insurer
  • Pretends to be from your insurer

Your insurer will never send someone without telling you first — and will never ask you for money.

If something feels off:

  • Ask for ID
  • Call your insurer to confirm
  • Check whether the work is covered before agreeing
